     Add pebbles, shells, glass marbles, or whatever else you can think of.  I like pebbles because they give it a real natural feeling.   When you look into moving water what do you see?  Pebbles.  After adding the pebbles, bring the water level up so it is just one inch or so below the bottom piece of slate.  Too much drop and you could have a splashy fountain.
