Mark and trim tubing to length.  Click to see a larger image.

     Trim the tubing so that it is flush with the top of the slate.  It is not a good idea to let the tubing protrude through the upper hole because it can cause the fountain to squirt all over like putting your thumb over a running garden hose.  The illustration shows marking the tubing with a knife.   You can then remove the upper piece of slate and make the actual cut with scissors if you prefer.
