Weatherproof Bird Feeders
We live in a very wet, rainy
part of the country, the Pacific Northwest Coast, and so we are probably
more critical than most wild bird suppliers when it comes to weatherproof
feeders. Though many feeders claim to be weatherproof, most are
not. Wet seed will start to mold, ferment or sprout, either driving
away your birds or causing illness. Keep your seed dry with one of our
tested weatherproof feeders.

"Feather" All-weather Feeder |

This feeder is a most unusual design. The six quart seed
compartment is totally enclosed and safe from moisture.
Birds land on the tray at the bottom and must reach up underneath
the hood to pull down seed. We were skeptical at
first. We put some seed in the tray to prime it and the
birds got
the hang of it in less than an hour. The tray is well
drained and the birds tend to eat any seed which falls onto it
first so seed doesn't accumulate. And the feeding position is such that their droppings
go over the side, reducing the spread of avian diseases.
Made of stainless steel and polycarbonate to last for many
years. The price may seem a little spendy, but this is a
large feeder which will save its cost in seed this winter.
A squirrel baffle is available which
should keep gray squirrels out of your seed. The openings are
too large to block our smaller western Douglas squirrels, but they can't get past the tall sides of the seed compartment,
anyway, so they probably won't be a problem.
(You can see photos of the squirrel
baffle and the feeder
with it installed.)
